We all know that if we wind up in a general healthcare emergency, we should call 911. But who can we call if we have a dental emergency? What does a dental emergency look like and what can we do while we’re waiting for help to arrive? At Unique Dental Care in Mesa, we’re here to answer all of those questions so you can be ready to face the unexpected.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

An accident can happen at any time of the day or night. It’s important to know what sort of tooth injury can wait to be treated until you can get in to see the dentist and what needs immediate treatment. Here are some questions you can ask to determine if you are experiencing a dental emergency:

  • Is one of your adult teeth loose?
  • Have you lost a tooth that could be saved with emergency treatment?
  • Are you bleeding?
  • Do you have a fever or other signs of infection, such as pus or swelling of the gums and face?
  • Are you in severe pain?

If your tooth is severely cracked or completely knocked out or you suspect nerve damage, you should seek treatment right away with a dentist near you, like those at Unique Dental Care, who specialize in emergency dentistry.

What Should You Do?

If your tooth is broken there are a few things you can do to get you through till you see the dentist; rinse with warm salt water, apply pressure with gauze or a tea bag to stop bleeding, and apply a cold pack to the cheek or gum to reduce swelling.

A knocked out tooth should be handled as little as possible. See if you can place it back in the socket, but be careful not to swallow it. If the tooth won’t stay in the socket, rinse it with clean water and place it in a container of milk or your saliva until you get to the dentist.
